Hazelwood Primary School
SCHOOL INTRODUCTION
SEP. 2017
Hazelwood opened its doors in September 1985, only made possible by the determination of 16 ordinary parents who were committed to providing Integrated Education in North Belfast. These parents had faith in their ideals and believed that bringing children together in schools would help to heal the divisions in our society caused by religion and politics.
Hazelwood prides itself on being a warm, welcoming place for both parents and children. We educate and nurture children of all faiths and none, together and on a footing of equality and in an atmosphere of mutual respect. We believe in a child centred approach to education, matching children`s abilities and interests. Parental involvement plays a major role in the life of the school.
We are an integrated, co-educational, inclusive school. At Hazelwood we value all our pupils as individuals and respect their right to be different and to excel in different ways. We attempt to provide a model for living in advance of what is usual in Northern Ireland, since we believe that schools can lead society, not simply reflect it.
The school provides a broad and balanced curriculum which embraces the new Northern Ireland Curriculum. Teachers employ a topic based approach to their planning that provides activity based learning for our children relevant to every day life. Communication is at the heart of all learning, and is essential to personal success, academic achievement, social skills and life long learning. We strive to provide the best possible grounding for our children in Language and Literacy. This is achieved through the strong emphasis on communication, interaction and self expression during the early years.
Hazelwood is at the heart of the community in North Belfast. The school is a resource for the local and wider community. The school hosts many clubs for children and various community meetings take place periodically throughout the year. Pupils play an active role in the community including singing at local nursing homes and performing at events in Belfast. Many inter-school sporting games take place throughout the year.
Hazelwood PS has several levels of experience and skills which are relevant and beneficial for this project. We have an established and successful record of partnerships at a local, national, European and International Level. We have maintained cross-community partnerships with local schools in Belfast centred around shared sporting activities.
We aim to create an active partnership between parents and teachers. Parents as co-educators are vital to their child`s progress and success. Close co-operation and involvement with parents in the learning process is invaluable. Mrs Suzanne Watson is the school`s Maths coordinator. She is working closely alongside teachers to ensure each child achieves full potential in Maths. This involves close monitoring and evaluating of the teaching and learning in Hazelwood. She is one of the most experienced teacher of our school with managing previous cross-community projects in Belfast.
Mr BalazsKecskemeti who is employed as part of our Extended School Programme brings specific expertise to the STEM TO STEAM project. He will undertake a pivotal role in the training being offered under the proposed project. He has already led an etwinning project between Hazelwood and many other European schools under a similar theme and this project is a natural extension with several of the existing participants forming part of the application. He is also an eTwinning Ambassador by the British Council and holds workshops on the field of Chess in Schools locally and internationally.
As a cross-curricular theme ICT forms an integral part of the delivery of the NI Curriculum and. In Hazelwood we have made considerable investment in hardware to assist with the development of relevant ICT skills and enhancement of curriculum delivery.
